Skull & Crossbones Brooch

DESCRIPTION

A brooch made by a neophyte JdV in the 17th century whilst undergoing her alchemical apprenticeship. She dexterously carved the shield and cranium from authentic Whitby jet and mounted it on a gold backing, complete with Turtledove's femora crossbones and the epitaph, PULVIS ET UMBRA SUMUS (we are but dust and shadow).
